The International Environment Library Consortium was founded to provide access to an array of resources in environment, ecology, wildlife, natural resources, business, and economics subjects and to make these resources from major publishers affordable at the not-for-profit scale.

The first consortium designed for non-academic institutions, the IELC was founded in 2009 as a cooperative licensing partnership, and will undertake new development projects over time for products and services that would benefit members.
